Lecture: • Risk Management and Patient Safety are critical components of the safe delivery of quality Pediatric Emergency Care. It is important for the clinician to understand risk from the patient and from the physician perspective. Risk management identifies the risks and delivery of emergency care, identifies the cause or causes and recommends remedies or methods to avoid error. Inaccurate diagnosis, causing more suffering, anxiety, cost (cost of care, loss of income) for the patient and worst case is loss of life. For physicians, missing important information and diagnostic clues, getting the wrong diagnosis, wrong treatment or being sued for malpractice or your Patient has a complication or dies. To reduce risk, one should get the best training possible, continue to learn, avoid cognitive diagnostic errors and correct System Problems. In this lecture, I will discuss the components of risk management briefly, discuss cognitive errors and how to reduce them and review several cases where errors were made in the management of patients.
