Where We Are -2018 Korean EMT/Paramedic Survey in Hospital-

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to figure out personalities, welfare, labor conditions, and job satisfactions of emergency medical technicians(EMT) in hospital. Since 1995 there have been quantitative and qualitative development about the Korea emergency medicine. But Korean EMT who working in hospital could not established in Korea emergency medicine part because of working conditions. Though this study, the Korean EMTs in hospital expect to make baseline data and establish a criterion of task in hospital.
Methods: This survey was conducted from JAN. to APR. in 2019 for 3,800 EMT working in hospital. All questionnaire has made by EMT working in hospital. The survey consisted of personal interest, well-being and sleep quality and all around satisfaction of working conditions. And this survey was tried to figure out different of satisfaction according to difference in satisfaction based on work place and labor contracts.
Result: A total of 1,320 survey were currently working in the hospital among 2,321 participants. Among 1,320 participants, 724 EMTs were working in emergency room. The others were working in other departments like operation room, intensive care unit, ward, and so on. Against all our expectations, most of 528 EMTs were belonging to nursing department. 325 EMTs were belonging to emergency medicine department. 725 of EMTs were permeant workers and 275 EMTs were contract workers. 637 of EMTs answered that they were working for 8 hours~12 hours(48.3%). And, they answered that they were working over time in the hospital. Specially, 485 permeant workers were working over time.(49.2%) than contract workers. Most of EMTs working in the hospital implemented chest compression during cardiopulmonary resuscitation(42.1%), wound dressing(44.1%), EKG monitoring(37.9%), and arterial blood gas analysis(35.2%). Compare with self satisfaction of duty according to deferent work departments in hospital, EMTs who working in emergency room were more higher than other work departments(4.0±0.9, p<0.05). 41.4% of EMTs answered that they were interested in studies of advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation(ACLS). But most of EMTs were trained by work experience.(45.3%) In the survey more than 51.4% of EMT working in hospital were considering turn over from currently working place in hospital. Especially, EMTs working in the ward or operation department wanted to more turn over than EMTs working in the other department. Factors influencing to turn over were scale of emergency room, work place, discord between operators, anxiety of duty, future possibilities, contract finish, labor condition of hospital. (p <0.05)
Conclusion: Through this survey ‘2018 MASTER’, we could figure out a satisfaction of duty quality of EMTs working in hospital. Even thou Korean EMTs was very important in portion of emergency medical system, their quality and satisfaction of duty in hospital was lower than we expected. So, we hope that all of these data from 2018 MASTER survey use to make change of poor duty conditions and quality for EMTs working in hospital. Furthermore, we wish that we can make change of work limitation in hospital through this survey.
