Use of Observation Wards For Geriatric Emergency Medicine
1TBD, TBD, Australia
The prevailing challenge of geriatric emergency medicine is to bring the main intervention that we know works for frail older people - Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment - to the front door of the hospital. In this talk I will discuss several different models of care used internationally to achieve this aim, with an emphasis on use of the ED observation unit. I will describe how I developed a falls pathway at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Australia as one exemplar that physicians could modify for use in their own EDs.
