Regionalization of STEMI Care
1President-Elect, National Association of EMS Physicians, United States of America
Regionalization of care as a systematic method of bringing patients with time-critical illness to designated facilities in a defined geographic region with the capabilities and resources immediately available to provide appropriate, specialized treatment (ACEP Position Paper). The impact of regionalization of ST-segment-elevation care on treatment times and outcomes for emergency medical services-transported patients has been studied and has had favorable impact. Additionally, regionalization of care for patients in cardiogenic shock requiring advanced therapies such as left ventricular assist devices or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation likely benefit from preferential treatment at specialized centers. This session will discuss the science supporting regionalization of STEMI care as well as the practicalities involved in implementation in various environments.
