A Focused Triage For Early Recognition of Infection Risk

Abstract for presentation.
The emergency room plays a pivotal role in screening the urgent needs of patients with diverse diseases. Patients with infectious diseases, in particular, require timely triage for appropriate treatment as well as for the protection of other patients and staff from potentially contagious infections. The threat of transmission may include highly contagious infections imported by a traveler that may go undetected during the critical first hours in a crowded emergency room. Traditional triage protocols do not necessarily prioritize fever or travel history. Hospitals need to modify their triage process to include specific questions to detect early signs, symptoms, or clues of communicable diseases.
