To Err Is Human: Surviving Humanity
1Emergency Medicine, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, United Kingdom
Medical error has been estimated to cause thousands of preventable deaths per year. Much focus has been placed on engineering health care systems to prevent these errors. More recent literature has recognised that healthcare providers can suffer ill effects after an error, although referring to professionals involved in medical error as "second victims" has raised objections from patients and relatives. This presentation will explore the effects of error on the practitioner and the team, with particular reference to supporting practitioners and enhancing patient safety.
